A useful fit for

A 10,000-SACC connected AC with supplemental 12,000-BTU Heat mode for a location where the required pump-drain hose can be safely routed.

The main tradeoff

Heat requires a separate drain-hose plan; LG documents indoor bucket drainage near 32°F but gives no heat-mode ambient limit in the inspected exact sources.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does LP1021BHSM meet a 10,000-SACC cooling threshold?

Yes. The exact model is listed at 10,000 DOE SACC; its 14,000 ASHRAE figure is a different test method.

Is heating a real operating mode, and what drain route goes with it?

LG specifies 12,000 BTU heating, and its model-family manual requires the pump-drain hose in Heat; near 32°F it directs indoor drainage to a bucket that must be monitored.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can the heating mode run without installing its drain hose?

No. The manual states that the Heat mode requires drain-hose installation; choosing heat but insisting on no hose excludes this configuration.

Does an app-control requirement fit this model?

Yes. LG lists ThinQ/Wi-Fi on this exact cooling-and-heating configuration, with local remote and panel controls as alternatives.

The LG LP1021BHSM combines 10,000 BTU/h of DOE SACC cooling, ThinQ Wi-Fi and a listed 12,000-BTU heating mode. That last feature distinguishes it from the almost-same-code LP1021BSSM, which is cooling-only. Heating also changes ownership: LG’s exact manual says the pump-drain hose must be installed while Heat is operating, so this is not a set-and-forget heater for a location without a drain route.

Cooling capacity and the supplemental heat figure

LG’s model-specific sheet lists 10,000 BTU/h DOE cooling, 14,000 BTU/h ASHRAE cooling, and 12,000 BTU/h heating. Use the 10,000-SACC number for comparisons with other DOE-rated portable ACs; 14,000 is not an additional cooling setting. LG estimates cooling up to 450 square feet, but that figure cannot reflect each room’s sun, ceiling height, air leakage, insulation or heat-generating equipment. The spec presents the 12,000 figure as heating performance; it does not provide an outdoor-temperature operating range. Do not assume the number guarantees heating in every winter condition or substitutes for a whole-home heating plan.

The exact product page lists Cool, Dry, Heat and Fan, ThinQ controls, remote and local panel, auto-swing air outlet and timer. The manual’s app section says a 2.4-GHz network is required. Its settings still work locally if you do not want app control. The exact spec reports 53/50 dBA high/low and 3.4 pints per hour dehumidification; these remain manufacturer values rather than measurements in a bedroom or a damp basement.

Heat adds a mode-specific drain task

The distinguishing installation point is easy to miss in a short listing. The LP1021BHSM is named on the Wi-Fi family manual cover, and the manual’s Heat-mode section says to install the provided pump-drain hose; when outside temperature is at or near 32°F, it directs indoor drainage. The described indoor route uses a bucket of at least 28 ounces, which must be checked and emptied frequently to prevent overflow. Above freezing, the manual allows an outdoor route, with the outlet aimed away from surfaces that can be stained or damaged. That is a real maintenance and placement condition, not merely a fitting included in the box.

A different continuous garden-hose route applies to Dry mode only. LG’s manual describes self-evaporation during use, but it still covers a collection tank and a “FL” full-tank indication that stops the appliance until emptied. Do not confuse Dry-mode gravity drainage, the Heat-mode pump drain hose and ordinary cooling operation; each is a different plan. If you cannot watch an indoor bucket or route a hose safely in Heat, the BSSM cooling-only sibling or a different heating solution may be a better choice.

Size, electrical supply and regular care

The exact dimensions are 17.72 inches wide, 29.33 high and 15.59 deep, with a listed 77.2-pound product weight. Leave space for the single exhaust hose, airflow, filter access and the lower drain. It is not the right model if you need an especially low unit; the lower-capacity LP0721WSR is 27.36 inches tall, while still far heavier than a small appliance. The included panel is documented for most sliding windows with an 18–50-inch clear opening. Test the actual sash and hose route, not just a measurement of the frame.

LG lists 115 volts, 1,210 watts and 12 amps, with a dedicated grounded 15-amp receptacle required by the manual. LG warns against extension cords, surge protectors and multi-outlet adapters. The washable filter should be cleaned every two weeks, more often as dust requires. The exact support page lists one year for parts and labor.

Who should choose the heat model

Choose LP1021BHSM if you need 10,000-SACC cooling, app control and a heating mode, and you can satisfy that mode’s pump-drain instructions. It is a poor fit if heat is expected to run without a drain hose, if you need dual-hose exhaust, or if a documented minimum outdoor heat-pump temperature is essential: the exact sources examined do not state such a range. The public matcher treats heat and heat drainage together so that a general “has heat” label cannot hide this setup requirement.

If you want the same cooling rating and cabinet family but not heat, compare the LP1021BSSM. It is only about 1.1 pounds lighter, but omits Heat. Do not let the near-identical letters collapse two distinctly useful configurations. If 8,000 SACC is enough and the smaller room calls for a lighter unit, the LP0821GSSM gives ThinQ control without heating. A heat rating is a feature, not proof of winter output at an unstated ambient temperature.
