BLACK+DECKER BPP08 vs BPP10: cooling capacity and Heat suffixes

Four exact BPP model codes create two independent choices: 8,000 or 10,000 BTU/h DOE/SACC cooling, and with or without a Heat mode. The models share a window-kit and hose manual, but the suffix and capacity number still change what the appliance can do.

Start with the DOE number, then decide about heat

The U.S. support articles list BPP08WTB and BPP08HWTB at 8,000 BTU/h DOE and 12,000 BTU/h ASHRAE. The BPP10WTB and BPP10HWTB entries are 10,000 BTU/h DOE and 14,000 BTU/h ASHRAE. The “8” and “10” groups are different cooling tiers; neither the higher ASHRAE figure nor the marketing room-size estimate is a replacement for the DOE/SACC comparison. The BPP10 tier is larger on the published DOE basis, but actual comfort still depends on the room’s sun, insulation, ceiling, heat sources and closed-door use.

The suffix is a second, separate choice. WT models provide Cool, Dehumidify and Fan; the HWTB models add Heat. The support articles say BPP08HWTB has 9,000 BTU/h heating and BPP10HWTB has 11,000 BTU/h heating, both as ASHRAE figures. The shared instruction manual restricts Heat to those two HWTB codes. If you do not need a heater, the “H” configuration is not a reason by itself to pay more or accept a broader operating task. If heat is essential, neither cooling-only WT model qualifies.

They share an installation approach, not an open-window workaround

All four are single-hose units. For Cool and Heat the exhaust hose must connect from the cabinet to the window panel; Dehumidify does not strictly require the hose but the manual recommends it for more effective moisture removal. In Fan, disconnect the exhaust hose. This means a window opening and hose route are basic conditions even if the cabinet rolls between rooms. The manual’s standard slider range is 26.5–48.4 inches. It permits shortening the panel below 26.5 inches but does not give a supported minimum after cutting, and the hose port must remain intact. Use the measured opening range as confirmed fit; do not count a smaller custom opening automatically.

Check clearances beyond the slider: a hose can kink in a narrow gap, curtains or furniture can block airflow, and the appliance needs a firm level floor. The manual tells owners to keep the hose run short and avoid sharp bends. The named four-model instruction manual includes heat-specific pages, but an operating condition shown for Heat should not be confused with a verified cold-outdoor heat-pump rating. It lists 45–81°F as room temperature for Heat and 61–88°F as the selectable setpoint. The inspected text does not establish a heating mechanism; shoppers who require a stated outdoor heat limit need a model whose exact manual provides one.

Think about water and care before choosing “self-evaporating”

The BPP manual says the water reservoir generally will not fill in Cool or Heat unless humidity is high; it still documents E2 drain warnings in Cool or Dehumidify and E4 in Heat. The supplied 3.3-foot drain hose can continuously route water by gravity to a floor drain or drip tray. Dehumidify has a continuous-drain recommendation; no lift pump is documented. In a humid climate, do not treat automatic evaporation as proof of a never-drain routine. Decide whether a downhill drain path is practical and whether an occasional manual drain would be acceptable.

Weekly filter cleaning is part of the ownership plan. The manual says to vacuum the evaporator filter, rinse it in lukewarm water if needed and let it dry before reinstalling. The exact support pages describe four cooling speeds, three fan speeds, a remote, timer and sleep function. These conveniences do not settle a noise or efficiency comparison: the exact BPP08/10 support records do not provide a verified EnergyGuide CEER here, and no sound measurement is made for this review set.

Keep disputed dimensions out of a tight-fit decision

The updated 2025 exact support articles list a 16.5 × 11.7 × 27.9-inch cabinet and masses from 59 to 61 pounds. An older official 1.9 BPP-family manual names the same four codes but gives different dimensions and weights. The evidence does not resolve whether the figures reflect revisions or a bad product-data field, so none of these four gets a hard-fit clearance from those values. The BPP10HWTB current product page also carries a visibly mixed generic detail block for an 8,000-SACC/12,000-ASHRAE, 450-square-foot model and a 58-dBA figure, despite the BPP10HWTB title and model code. Those stray details are not transferred to the BPP10HWTB. For a tight cabinet opening, exact doorway, circuit or lifting requirement, check the model label and latest carton/manual rather than relying on product copy that disagrees.

A quick decision path

  1. If an 8,000-SACC tier is sufficient and you do not need Heat, compare BPP08WTB.
  2. If you want the same cooling tier plus a heat mode, compare BPP08HWTB and account for its manual’s room-temperature Heat range.
  3. If you need the documented 10,000-SACC tier but not Heat, compare BPP10WTB.
  4. If both 10,000-SACC cooling and Heat are essential, compare BPP10HWTB, while treating its room-temperature limits and water warning seriously.
  5. If the must-have feature is dual-hose operation, a lift pump, connected app control, inverter compressor, exact CEER threshold or a disputed cabinet dimension, search beyond this BPP group.

Change those answers and the shortlist should change with them. A 9,000-BTU heating headline does not erase the BPP08’s 8,000-SACC cooling ceiling; a 49-inch opening falls outside the confirmed standard slider; and an exact app, pump or efficiency requirement should not be inferred from a similar suffix. Start with the four exact model reviews linked above, then verify the exact code on the appliance and current offer before purchase. A support-page record and an archived stock flag do not guarantee current availability at every retailer.
