Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
What cooling tier applies despite the larger ASHRAE headline?
The exact BPP08HWTB record lists 8,000 BTU/h DOE cooling, 12,000 BTU/h ASHRAE cooling and 9,000 BTU/h ASHRAE heating. Do not treat 12,000 as SACC.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a Heat mode essential, and does the exact code offer it?
BPP08HWTB is one of the two heat suffixes. The manual limits Heat to BPP08HWTB and BPP10HWTB; its operating-condition table gives a 45–81°F room-temperature range and the mode setpoint range is 61–88°F.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the included slider cover the opening you measured?
Its exact family manual lists 26.5–48.4 inches as the standard range and allows cutting only without cutting out the hose port. A 40-inch opening stays within the printed range.
Explore this need in the finder →Must heat operate only with a drain hose permanently routed?
In ordinary Cool/Heat operation the manual says automatic evaporation usually prevents a full tank unless humidity is high; E4 in Heat still means water must be drained. The supplied gravity hose is optional in normal Heat operation, not a lift pump.
Explore this need in the finder →BPP08HWTB is the heat-enabled member of BLACK+DECKER’s 8,000-SACC BPP08 pair. Its 9,000-BTU heating figure is stated on the ASHRAE basis, while its cooling listing separately gives 8,000 BTU/h DOE and 12,000 BTU/h ASHRAE. Buy it for the documented extra mode only if the window, single hose and water plan also work.
The H suffix changes the job
The manufacturer’s exact U.S. support article identifies the BPP08HWTB as a 12,000-BTU ASHRAE cooling / 9,000-BTU ASHRAE heating portable AC and separately lists 8,000 BTU DOE for cooling. Do not compare its 12,000-BTU cooling headline directly with a 12,000-SACC model. The exact support record lists four modes—Cool, Heat, Dehumidify and Fan—plus four cooling speeds, three fan speeds, a full-function remote, a 24-hour timer, sleep mode, a top LED display, automatic evaporation, a washable filter and R-32 refrigerant. In the shared manual, only the BPP08HWTB and BPP10HWTB are identified as heat models; BPP08WTB is cooling-only.
This configuration suits a household that wants one movable appliance for summer cooling and occasional shoulder-season heat, but not someone seeking a known low-temperature heat-pump performance guarantee. The instruction manual gives a 45–81°F room-temperature range for Heat and a 61–88°F setpoint range. It does not identify the heating mechanism as a heat pump in the passages inspected, so those room-temperature figures are not treated as an outdoor heat-pump operating limit. If your essential question is whether it will heat when outdoor air is at a stated temperature, the published evidence here does not answer that question.
Installation still looks like a portable AC
The BPP08HWTB is not an unvented space heater. The manual says to attach its single exhaust hose for Cool, Dehumidify and Heat, then remove the hose for Fan. The included adjustable panel is specified for standard 26.5–48.4-inch window openings. For an opening narrower than 26.5 inches, the manual permits cutting the panel but gives no new minimum and warns never to remove the hose port. We therefore count only the printed 26.5-to-48.4-inch span as a confirmed fit. Measure the opening and plan the hose bend before moving the appliance into place; the manual recommends keeping hose length minimal and avoiding sharp bends.
Electrical and placement constraints should be checked before delivery. The exact support page lists 1,320 W, 11.8 working amps and 57 startup amps. The manual calls for a properly rated grounded outlet, a firm, level floor and unobstructed air paths. The support record’s 16.5 × 11.7 × 27.9-inch dimensions and 60-pound weight conflict with an older official BPP manual that assigns the BPP08HWTB different dimensions and a 64.5-pound weight. Because neither source supplies a clear revision bridge for this exact code, those figures remain unresolved for a tight-space or lifting decision. The listed 9,000-BTU heat output also does not make this a dual-hose design: this is a one-hose plan.
Heat does not mean no water handling
The manual says self-evaporation ordinarily keeps the reservoir from filling during cooling or heating unless humidity is high, and that drainage is usually needed at season’s end. It also says E2 in Cool or Dehumidify and E4 in Heat mean the unit must be drained. A supplied 3.3-foot drain hose can be used to route water by gravity into a floor drain or drip tray; no built-in lift pump is documented. In Dehumidify mode, the manual recommends continuous drainage. For Heat, it does not require leaving a drain hose connected in normal conditions, but an E4 stop still requires water removal. That distinction matters: the model is not a “never drain it” appliance.
Filter upkeep is another recurring task, not a once-a-season detail. BLACK+DECKER says to clean the evaporator filter every week of operation, vacuuming dust or rinsing it with lukewarm water when very dirty, and drying it before reinstallation. Leave room around the intake and outlet, and use a level hard surface rather than treating the casters as a substitute for stable placement. The one-year parts/labor coverage and five-year compressor-part term appear in the supplied manual; read the complete conditions, since a duration is not the whole warranty.
How a finder choice changes the shortlist
Selecting a 10,000-BTU/h SACC minimum should remove this model: its exact DOE cooling rating is 8,000. A required Heat mode keeps it and excludes the BPP08WTB. A heat-drain requirement should not force this unit into an unsupported continuous-drain plan; it can use its documented gravity hose, but its instructions do not state that a hose must remain attached for Heat. Conversely, an essential no-hose heat choice is compatible with its normal self-evaporating operation only with the high-humidity/full-tank caveat above. A 49-inch opening lies outside the confirmed panel span. Requirements for a dual hose, app control, inverter compressor or exact CEER also are not met by evidence in the sources reviewed.
Choose the BPP08WTB if you only need cooling and would rather not pay attention to a heat feature. Consider BPP10HWTB if its 10,000-SACC cooling tier better suits the room and you still want heat; its HWTB suffix is the corresponding heat configuration. Look beyond this family if you require two exhaust hoses, a confirmed heat-pump outdoor-temperature limit, a built-in condensate pump or settled dimensions. The BPP08HWTB is most useful when its exact 8k cooling / 9k ASHRAE heat identity and occasional heat are valuable, and when its documented one-hose installation and seasonal water checks are acceptable.
