BLACK+DECKER BP05PWA vs BP06PWA: 5,000 or 6,000 SACC?

BP05PWA and BP06PWA are two compact, cooling-only BLACK+DECKER single-hose portables that share a manual and much of their setup. The useful split is the documented 5,000-versus-6,000-BTU/h SACC tier, not the larger ASHRAE number on a listing. The extra capacity brings a heavier cabinet, so room load and moving route should decide between them.

Choose capacity for the room, not the box label

The BP05PWA is rated at 5,000 BTU/h SACC and the manufacturer pairs it with rooms up to 150 square feet. BP06PWA is 6,000 BTU/h SACC and is listed for up to 250 square feet. These are different published DOE seasonal-adjusted capacities. Both also have higher ASHRAE figures—8,000 and 10,000 BTU/h, respectively—but those are from a different rating method and should not be treated as equivalent to SACC. Do not choose a larger tier just because an ASHRAE number appears more familiar.

The square-foot guidance is a starting point, not a promise of a particular temperature. A sun-facing top-floor room with tall ceilings or an open doorway can ask more of a portable unit than a shaded, enclosed bedroom of the same area. If your space is near a stated limit, prioritize the actual heat load and treat the published area as a ceiling rather than a guarantee.

What does not change between the two?

Neither model adds a heater or a second hose. Each is a single-hose air conditioner with Cool, Dry and Fan modes, a remote, timer and washable filter. Cool and Dry require the exhaust connection; Fan can run without it. Choose another documented design if heat or a dual-hose operating plan is essential. A separate drainage pump is not documented for this pair, so an essential pump-only requirement should rule both out rather than assume that a supplied drain hose is a pump.

Their shared manual describes a sliding-window panel in the same approximate 27.5–47.2-inch opening range, with separate slider orientation for vertical and horizontal windows. Measure where the panel will sit and ensure the hose reaches without being stretched or sharply bent. A window number alone cannot confirm that the sash shape, screen, security lock or opening direction works with your installation. The manual permits panel cutting below the listed minimum but does not give a new numeric lower bound; do not count an unmeasured cut-down setup as a guaranteed fit.

Carry weight and clear space matter too

The model-specific listed weights are about 40.8 pounds for BP05PWA and 45.2 pounds for BP06PWA. That difference can matter on stairs or if you put the unit away each fall. Both share nearly the same 13-inch-wide by roughly 27-inch-tall footprint. The official manual and support specification differ slightly on depth (11 versus 11.2 inches), so leave clearance instead of using that disputed fraction as a tight alcove fit measurement. A page’s capacity cannot make a cabinet easier to maneuver.

Plan for water even with self-evaporation

In ordinary cooling, the design evaporates much of the condensate, but the manual still describes a full-water warning and bottom outlet. In humid conditions the tank can fill; Dry mode is specifically a reason to plan a continuous gravity route to a suitable drain or collection tray. It is not a pump-powered lift arrangement. Keep access to the drain and clean the washable filter on the manual’s weekly schedule. Neither the self-evaporation claim nor a room-size estimate removes these ownership tasks.

Choose BP05PWA when its 5,000-SACC tier is appropriate and carrying a slightly lighter unit matters. Step up to BP06PWA when its 6,000-SACC figure and larger stated area are useful and the additional weight is acceptable. If you need heating, two hoses, a verified deeper cabinet measurement or a pump, these shared-manual similarities are a reason to look beyond both rather than a reason to infer a feature.

Read the separate BP05PWA assessment and BP06PWA assessment before making a choice. Their model identities, weights and capacity differ even though the supplied manual and visible cabinet design overlap.
