A useful fit for

A current Danby option when 8,600 BTU/h SACC is appropriate for the room, a single-hose window route fits, the 73.2-pound cabinet and airflow clearances work, and gravity-down drainage is available for continuous Dry use.

The main tradeoff

The 450-sq-ft estimate is not a guarantee, and this is not a dual-hose unit or heat pump. The window kit has no confirmed numerical uncut span. It is heavy, needs substantial clearance, and its exact EnergyGuide CEER is not available from the linked sources; its 45 dB page claim and 50.5 dB high spec line also differ.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does 8,600 BTU/h SACC meet your cooling floor, or do you need a 10,000-SACC tier?

The exact page and sheet give 8,600 SACC and 14,000 ASHRAE. It meets an 8,000-SACC floor but not 10,000.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can your installation use one exhaust hose, or is a dual-hose layout essential?

The exact page and model-named manual identify one exhaust hose; a dual-hose need excludes this configuration.

Explore this need in the finder →
Must the unit also heat the room?

The exact product page and manual describe Cool, Auto, Dry and Fan, not heating.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is connected app control enough, or must an inverter compressor also be documented?

Danby confirms wireless app control and the Follow Me remote, but the exact source set does not identify an inverter compressor. App alone is documented; app-plus-inverter is not.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will the standard uncut window panel meet your measured opening span?

The exact manual covers hung/sliding window installation but the inspected source does not give numeric uncut endpoints. A hard numerical opening requirement needs Danby confirmation.

Can you handle a 73.2-pound listed cabinet?

The exact product page lists 73.2 lb. A 74-pound ceiling includes that weight; 73 pounds does not.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will a 30.5-inch cabinet height fit your body-only maximum?

Danby lists a 30.43-inch cabinet. A 30.5-inch ceiling clears the body but not the extra space needed above its outlet louver.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is gravity-only drainage acceptable for continuous Dry mode, or must the appliance pump water upward?

The exact 2025 manual says there is no drain pump and the continuous hose works by gravity only, descending directly toward the floor. A pump-essential need excludes it.

Explore this need in the finder →
Must an exact EnergyGuide label CEER value meet a minimum?

The exact sheet prints CEER 7.42, but the exact product page does not link an EnergyGuide. A label-only CEER minimum remains unverified until that exact label is found.

The Danby DPA086B8BDB-6 is a black, single-hose portable air conditioner rated at 8,600 BTU/h SACC and 14,000 BTU/h ASHRAE. Danby estimates cooling up to 450 square feet, but that is a manufacturer screening figure rather than a promise for a particular room. Sun exposure, insulation, ceiling height, adjoining openings and appliances change the heat load. Start with the SACC figure when comparing models, and do not treat the larger ASHRAE headline as 14,000 SACC.

Higher output without a dual-hose layout

The exact product page describes cooling, fan and dehumidifier functions, two fan speeds, a washable filter, wireless app control, a Follow Me remote, a 24-hour timer, auto-restart and castors with side handles. Despite the higher capacity, the DPA086 is still a one-hose design. Its single exhaust duct sends warm air outside; it does not have a second outdoor intake duct. A buyer who requires dual-hose operation should exclude it rather than treating “14,000 BTU” as a substitute for a different airflow arrangement.

Danby lists a 17.72-by-14.09-inch cabinet footprint, 30.43-inch height and 73.2-pound product weight. The close comparison is the white DPA072B8WDB-6: its exact sheet is rated 7,200 SACC, and it weighs 72.8 pounds with the same listed cabinet dimensions. The DPA086 therefore adds 1,400 SACC on paper for only 0.4 pound more listed weight, but it is still a substantial appliance to carry up stairs. It needs a level, sturdy surface and usable clearance: the shared 2025 manual calls for 12 inches at the front and sides, 20 inches behind, and 20 inches in front of the horizontal louver. A cabinet that fits a closet or alcove can still fail the airflow-clearance test.

Check the window route and the water route

The model-named manual supports a hung or sliding window installation and calls for the exhaust hose in Cool and Auto. Fan does not need the exhaust hose; Dry also does not need it. The manual says that a continuous drain hose may be necessary during Dry mode and that the provided drain hose works by gravity only. It must descend straight from the connection toward the floor, without a lift or pump; if the internal tray fills, a P1 warning sounds and cooling or dehumidifying stops while the fan may continue. The manual describes unplugging the appliance before connecting the drain hose. Plan a real downward path to a floor drain, sink or suitable receptacle if uninterrupted Dry operation matters.

The exact documents do not state numeric uncut window-panel endpoints. Measure the opening and confirm the kit’s usable span before purchase if a strict opening dimension is essential. The cabinet is large enough that placement should be planned with the hose attached, not just with the appliance parked beside a window. The page lists 24 months of parts-and-labor coverage with in-home service; that does not remove the need to check the installation and clearance details.

Controls help, but claims need context

The remote includes Follow Me sensing, and the page documents wireless connection and app control. The manual’s display supports Auto, Cool, Dry and Fan; Cool is adjustable from 62–86°F. App access may be useful when you want to change a setting from another room or while away, but it is an extra control path, not a substitute for a correctly sized room and an exhaust hose installed as directed. The manual’s filter light appears after 250 hours as a cleaning reminder; it also recommends cleaning the three filters every two weeks, more often in homes with pets.

Noise descriptions are not consistent enough to use as a firm quiet-room ranking. Danby’s page says operation can be as low as 45 dB, while the exact spec sheet lists 50.5 dB on its sound line. Both are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements, and the documents do not provide one common test condition that reconciles them. The specification sheet also prints CEER 7.42, but the exact product page does not link an EnergyGuide. Because this site’s efficiency question is specifically about the exact label, the DPA086 does not pass a required label-CEER minimum until an exact EnergyGuide is verified.

Choose it for the real difference

The DPA086 is a plausible fit when the room needs more published cooling capacity than Danby’s DPA065 or DPA072, and when you can accommodate a single hose, a heavy cabinet and a gravity-only Dry drain. It is not a heat pump, not an inverter-confirmed configuration, and not a dual-hose model. Danby’s smaller DPA050E2BDB-6 trades output down to 5,000 SACC and a 52.2-pound, 12.6-inch-square cabinet; the DPA072 sits between them at 7,200 SACC with wireless control and a gravity Dry drain. Compare the exact models in the Danby DPA050/DPA072/DPA086 setup guide, and read the DPA072 review if the slightly lighter, lower-capacity white configuration is a closer match.

The exact specification lists 115 V, 10 A and 1,120 W. The owner’s manual says not to use an extension cord. Keep those circuit instructions, the hose path and the drainage route in the same decision as the capacity number; a larger SACC figure is only useful if the whole operating plan works in your room.
