Honeywell HW2CESAWW9 vs HW2HESAWW9: cooling or heat?

The Honeywell HW2CESAWW9 and HW2HESAWW9 look like close relatives and share the same published cooling figures, but they answer different household needs. Both are discontinued U.S. models with a single exhaust hose, 12,000 BTU/h ASHRAE and 8,600 BTU/h SACC cooling claims. The practical split is whether you need heat—and whether you can accommodate the model's heating temperature limits and tank-draining routine.

Start with the cooling rating, not the larger headline

For both exact configurations, 8,600 BTU/h SACC is the useful published cooling comparison figure; 12,000 BTU/h is the ASHRAE number, not a second operating mode. Neither model meets a hard 10,000-SACC requirement. Honeywell advertises an area estimate up to 550 square feet, but that estimate does not account for every room's sun exposure, insulation, ceiling or internal heat. If a room is near a capacity boundary, use its real heat load rather than buying from the headline square footage.

Choose the CESAWW9 when cooling is enough

The HW2CESAWW9 is the cooling-only option. It adds cooling, fan and Dry/dehumidifier modes but no heat pump. That can be the simpler match for seasonal cooling when your heating system is handled separately. Its exact page and a licensed Honeywell consumer-store listing provide more cabinet information than the HESAWW9 page, but the height, window-panel span, hose diameter, fan-speed count and continuous Dry-drain contents do not agree across those sources. Width and depth are listed as 16.3 by 13.6 inches and the listings agree on 59.5 pounds; do not treat a single conflicting height or kit range as a guaranteed fit. The linked manual documents a one-hose 12–47-inch extension and panel section lengths, not one settled uncut opening range.

Choose the HESAWW9 only if its heat routine is useful

The HW2HESAWW9 adds a heat-pump mode and keeps the same 8,600-SACC cooling tier. Its exact product page separately claims 8,600 BTU of heating capacity but does not state a test basis. The shared manual says heat activates at an ambient temperature between 44 and 77°F and allows a 61–77°F set point. That makes it a supplemental option for conditions inside the stated band, not a cold-weather furnace replacement or a documented solution below 44°F. The exhaust hose must vent outdoors while heating.

Heat also changes condensate handling. The manual says heating water collects in the internal tank, the unit pauses when full, and continuous drainage is not available in Heat. Emptying that tank is part of the operating plan, especially in a humid room; Honeywell recommends heat mode at 50% relative humidity or lower and advises avoiding moisture-producing appliances during use. Continuous gravity drainage is described for Dry mode using a separately supplied hose, but that does not convert into a drain-hose route for heating.

Check the installation and age of the offer

Both configurations are single-hose appliances. Their manuals caution against lengthening the exhaust hose or sharply bending it. The manual's 5.9-inch hose diameter conflicts with the cooling-only sibling's licensed-store specification, so check the actual connector if a strict fit is important. The HESAWW9 page does not publish exact cabinet dimensions, weight, CEER or clear window endpoints; the visually similar CESAWW9 is not proof of those missing values. Measure the unit and kit in hand before committing to a tight alcove or unusual window.

Both exact product pages are marked discontinued. A marketplace result is not proof of new stock, a working warranty claim or a complete installation kit. For an older offer or existing unit, verify the model suffix, condition, return rights, drain pieces and seller's written terms. A hard heat need rules out the CESAWW9; a hard below-44°F heat requirement, continuous heat-drain requirement, dual-hose requirement, 10,000-SACC floor or strict unconfirmed window span rules out both. Compare the HW2CESAWW9 assessment and HW2HESAWW9 assessment before weighing an older listing.
