Compare Whynter NEX 10,000-SACC and 12,000-SACC portable ACs

A shared NEX name does not mean every Whynter portable has the same output or cabinet. The ARC-1280WX (white) and ARC-1280MX (black) are finish variants of a current 10,000-BTU/h SACC dual-hose inverter. The ARC-1030WN is also rated 10,000 SACC but has a taller, wider listed cabinet and unresolved page/manual weight and window-span details. The ARC-1230WN raises the documented rating to 12,000 SACC and carries a larger maker room estimate, while the exact manual family and older page details still require careful fit checking. Compare [the ARC-1280 pair review](/reviews/whynter-arc-1280wx-mx/), [ARC-1030WN review](/reviews/whynter-arc-1030wn/) and [ARC-1230WN review](/reviews/whynter-arc-1230wn/) before treating the family name or image as a specification.

Start with the rating that matches the room need

The current ARC-1280 pages and the shared 2026 manual give 13,000 BTU/h ASHRAE and 10,000 SACC. Both finishes are cooling-only. Whynter's current ARC-1030WN is also a 10,000-SACC cooling-only model; moving from that to the ARC-1230WN is the actual increase in documented DOE capacity, to 12,000 SACC. Whynter lists a room estimate of 500 square feet for the 1280 and 1030 and 600 square feet for the 1230, but these manufacturer figures are not guarantees. Sun, ceiling height, open connections and equipment heat can change the load. If your minimum is 10,000 SACC, either 1280 finish or the 1030WN can qualify. If 12,000 SACC is essential, do not count the 1280 or 1030's ASHRAE figure as a replacement for the 1230's larger SACC value.

Compare the exact footprint before a window capacity upgrade

The ARC-1280 is the compact cabinet of this three-way comparison: 17.36 inches wide, 15.63 deep and 28.62 high, with a manual net weight of 55.34 pounds. Its current guide gives a 28.7-to-82-inch window-panel span and two 7.5-inch hoses up to 60 inches long. The ARC-1030WN shares the 10,000-SACC tier but its listed cabinet is about 19.5 by 16.75 by 32.5 inches; its exact page and manual values do not line up cleanly on some fit fields, so its weight and upper panel span are not hard filters. The ARC-1230WN shares the larger NEX cabinet family, but its exact weight and maximum opening span are not settled for strict numeric matching. A person who needs 12,000 SACC and has a tight space may have to trade one requirement for the other; do not assume that the higher-output version is a drop-in cabinet swap.

All three are dual-hose coolers, not three heat choices

The 1280 pair, 1030WN and 1230WN use a dual-hose arrangement and document inverter operation with smart control. Each still needs a clear intake/exhaust path to a window opening. None of these three is the heat suffix: for winter heat, compare a documented heat-pump configuration such as the ARC-1230WNH and check its own heat-temperature and drain-hose instructions. The ARC-1280's NetHome Plus pairing path is stated in its exact manual and quick-start guide; there is no reason to treat the color choice as a change in app support.

Do not rank the siblings by one marketing number

The current ARC-1280 specification and current manual agree on 13,000 ASHRAE / 10,000 SACC, but its older exact pages retain 12,000 ASHRAE / 10,000 SACC and a different power figure. The 10,000-SACC value remains consistent. ARC-1030WN page/manual CEER values conflict, and ARC-1230WN lacks an accessible exact EnergyGuide in the retained sources. The 1280's exact model-named EnergyGuide text gives CEER 12.1, but the PDF bytes could not be downloaded locally. If an exact label threshold is central to your shortlist, compare only values established on the exact model label and remember that the figures are not independent energy tests.

Which one is the sensible shortlist?

  • Choose the ARC-1280WX or ARC-1280MX when the 10,000-SACC tier is adequate, you prefer white or black, and its compact cabinet plus 28.7–82-inch panel range fit the room. Both variants have the same documented feature plan.
  • Compare the ARC-1030WN if you want a 10,000-SACC NEX but can accept a taller, larger unit and can verify exact carton weight and the supplied slider maximum before buying.
  • Move up to ARC-1230WN only when 12,000 SACC is needed and the full-size body, window kit and lack of heat suit the installation. It is not a capacity-only upgrade with every other fit field guaranteed identical.

These are document-based distinctions, not hands-on cooling or noise results. Measure the opening, cabinet location and outlet first, then match the exact suffix to the same model name on the carton and instructions.

Measure the room and opening before you shop.
