Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
How does the gray model fit in a low space?
Midea lists it at 28.66 inches high and 17.44 inches wide. Measure the complete hose route and required clearance as well as the cabinet.
Explore this need in the finder →Is it lighter than the black Duo 10,000?
Midea lists 55.12 lb for the gray TGR-S and 72.75 lb for the black TBL. These are exact SKU values, not a general color change.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the EnergyGuide make it the more efficient 10,000-BTU option?
Its exact EnergyGuide lists CEER 12.3; the black TBL label lists 14.7. Do not treat those values as a prediction of your bill.
Explore this need in the finder →Will the adjustable window kit cover my opening?
A shared MAP-series guide that lists the TGR-S gives a 19.1–63.8 inch opening span. Measure the clear slider track and verify what panel pieces ship with the seller’s exact unit.
Explore this need in the finder →Not just a gray finish
The full model number is MAP12S1TGR-S. Midea's US product page identifies it as a gray 10,000-BTU DOE Duo, with the same advertised 450-square-foot room ceiling as its black MAP12S1TBL sibling. The EnergyGuide for this exact TGR-S SKU identifies 10,000 BTU capacity and CEER 12.3. Those numbers put it in the same nominal DOE cooling class as the black model, but the cabinet is materially different: Midea lists the gray unit at 17.44 inches wide, 13.74 inches deep and 28.66 inches high, versus 19.53 by 16.73 by 32.48 inches for the black TBL. The TGR-S is also listed at 55.12 pounds rather than 72.75.
That difference changes which spaces and routines make sense. If a low side table, closet opening, doorway or storage shelf makes the black cabinet awkward, the shorter gray configuration can be the more practical choice. Its casters are useful for rolling on a suitable level surface, but 55.12 pounds is still substantial when carrying it between floors. Think about the path from storage to the window, not just whether a rectangle fits next to the bed.
Cooling, exhaust and controls
Midea lists cooling, dehumidifying and ventilation, an inverter compressor, SmartHome app control, smartwatch and voice-assistant control, and a hose-in-hose dual-hose arrangement. It also advertises operation as low as 42 dBA. The sound figure and the stated “over 40% savings” comparison are manufacturer claims, not independent room measurements or a promise about the electricity bill. In practice, the cabinet, fan and compressor remain in the room; a dual-hose arrangement does not turn a portable AC into a window or split system.
The shared MAP-series guide that names the TGR-S lists a window-kit span of 19.1 to 63.8 inches. Measure the clear opening rather than the outside frame, and consider the direction of a sliding window and the room needed behind the cabinet for the hose. Treat the range as a fit check, not proof that every panel piece shown in a picture comes in the particular retail carton; Midea's product page confirms a mounting kit is included, but check its contents if your opening is unusually narrow, wide or nonstandard. The manual calls for filter cleaning every two weeks, a small but recurring ownership task.
The product listing says Heat: No, so this gray model is not a space heater. The “TGR-S” label should remain attached to any purchase search and manual request; a similar Midea model may have different controls, dimensions and installation details.
What the EnergyGuide does—and does not—say
The CEER 12.3 value is lower than the 14.7 Midea publishes for the black MAP12S1TBL. That difference can be useful when comparing the two 10,000-BTU products on the same type of standardized label. It does not prove the gray unit will cost a particular amount more to run in your home. The EnergyGuide uses fixed assumptions about hours and electricity rates; actual usage depends on your weather, thermostat setting, room, insulation, time at the compressor's different operating levels and the length of the cooling season.
For capacity, Midea's “up to 450 sq ft” figure is only a starting estimate. A sun-facing room with a hot computer, an open-plan space or high ceilings may need a different approach even if the measured floor area falls within the stated range. Choose from the DOE SACC rating and room load rather than treating room square footage as a guarantee or the model name's “12” as its cooling BTU rating.
Who it suits and the tradeoffs
The gray TGR-S is the Midea Duo to investigate when a relatively compact cabinet, lower listed weight and a two-year stated warranty are more important than the highest EnergyGuide CEER in this small comparison. The black TBL is taller and heavier but its CEER label is higher. The black MAP14S1TBL-A offers 12,000 BTU/h SACC for a larger cooling requirement, but it returns to a tall 32.48-inch cabinet and 73.85 pounds. If the room is below 30 inches of clearance, the gray model is the only one of these three that fits by its documented cabinet height.
Before buying, confirm the seller is actually offering MAP12S1TGR-S, then compare your measured opening with the shared guide's 19.1-to-63.8-inch span. The gray configuration is short and light for a 10,000-BTU/h SACC dual-hose machine, but routine filter cleaning remains part of ownership. Do not substitute a different Midea model just because its listing also uses the Duo name; the guide and product number should agree with the unit you receive.
Review limits
This is a source-based assessment, not a hands-on trial. I did not measure cooling, noise, power use or condensate output and did not use owner reviews. Midea's published product render shows a gray cabinet, but it is not evidence of in-room appearance or an actual photographed unit. Confirm the exact model, panel kit, operating instructions and full warranty with the seller before ordering.
