Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MAP10HS1XWGR heat as well as cool if I can route the drain?
Yes. Midea lists a heating mode, and its model-named manual gives heat-pump instructions and a 41–86°F operating range. During heat-pump operation the manual directs water to the lower drain connection, so choose heat only if a safe drain route is possible. It is an earlier model and appears only when earlier products are included.
Explore this need in the finder →Will this model work for a required single-hose layout and a cabinet under 29 inches tall?
The model-named manual lists one exhaust hose, and Midea lists a 28.66-inch cabinet height. It clears a 29-inch cabinet limit on paper, but still needs room around its air inlets and the exhaust hose.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the dark gray MAP10HS1XWGR meet a 10,000-BTU DOE minimum?
Midea's exact product page calls it a 10,000-BTU DOE model. The same page's image text includes a separate 13,500-BTU ASHRAE headline; do not substitute that number for the DOE rating. Midea marks this exact product unavailable, and its CEER remains unverified.
Explore this need in the finder →A dark-gray heat model from an earlier Midea generation
MAP10HS1XWGR is a 10,000-BTU DOE portable air conditioner with a heat-pump mode, SmartHome/app features and a dark-gray cabinet. Midea's exact U.S. product page now says the model is no longer available. This review is therefore most useful if you already own it or are evaluating a specific older offer; it is not a promise of current stock. Keep the model number intact: MAP10HS1XWGR is distinct from the later MAP10HS1XWGR-T suffix, and from MAP10S1XWBL, the cooling-only black model that shares its manual.
Read the capacity labels as two different claims
Midea's exact page calls this a 10,000-BTU DOE portable AC and gives a room-size estimate of up to 450 square feet. Image text on that page also says 13,500 BTU ASHRAE. These are not competing ratings for two versions: the DOE figure is the capacity figure used in this comparison, while the ASHRAE headline is from a different test method. Do not substitute one for the other when setting a minimum. The 450-square-foot statement is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for a sunny, open-plan or poorly insulated room. Room dimensions, ceiling height, sun exposure and adjoining spaces still matter.
The exact listing shows an Energy Guide card, but a model-matched CEER value could not be verified. Do not borrow from its black cooling-only sibling or a newer suffix; keep efficiency unknown and do not use it to meet a minimum CEER.
Heat changes the daily installation
This is a heat-pump portable AC, not just a cooling model with a fan setting. Midea's model-named manual lists heat-pump operation from 41°F to 86°F ambient temperature. That documented window is useful for transitional weather, but does not establish comfort or heating output below 41°F. If heat is essential, select heat in the finder and explicitly include earlier models; otherwise this unavailable model stays out of default results.
Heat-pump drainage is the main extra chore: the manual directs water out through the lower connection. Its accessory list includes a drain hose and a heat-pump adapter, but some parts in the shared manual are model-dependent, so verify the pieces in a used unit. Route the hose to a safe drain without kinks or a rising path; reinstall the plug when continuous drainage is not used. A full tray can stop cooling or dehumidification. If there is no practical drain route, choose a cooling-only model or another heat unit whose instructions fit the room.
One exhaust hose is not a Duo
The manual lists one exhaust hose, so this is a single-hose model, not a hose-in-hose Duo. Cooling needs a route outside through a window or comparable opening. Midea says its manual's window slider fits 19.4–62.2-inch openings and can be shortened; because that slider is marked as model-dependent, verify the pieces in a used unit. The manual also calls for 12 inches from nearby walls and 19.7 inches between the outlet and obstacles.
The cabinet is 17.44 inches wide, 28.66 inches high and 13.74 inches deep; Midea lists 71.43 pounds. Measure doorways, storage and exhaust-hose clearance as well as the alcove. Its relatively short height does not make it light to carry. A single-hose layout also differs materially from a Duo installation, so do not select dual-hose operation for this model.
Connected control and upkeep have limits
Midea advertises SmartHome-app, Apple Watch and voice-assistant control. Its manual describes ComfortSense as remote-based temperature sensing and says it exits after seven minutes without a signal. These are manufacturer claims, not a test of current app or network compatibility.
The reusable filter is washed in warm water and dried in the shade; the manual gives no model-specific interval. For storage it says to drain the tray, run Fan mode for 12 hours in a warm room, unplug and clean the appliance, and reinstall the dry filter. The listed one-year warranty begins at original purchase, so do not assume it transfers to a used unit.
Who should compare it with which model?
Compare MAP10HS1XWGR for an existing unit or a clearly identified older offer where 10,000 BTU DOE, a single exhaust hose and heat-pump operation are useful. In the finder, earlier-model inclusion, heat and a drain route are separate choices; a dual-hose requirement rejects it. A 12,000-BTU minimum or any essential CEER threshold also rejects it.
For a current-reference heat option, compare the black MAP14HS1TBL Duo: it has documented dual-hose operation, 12,000 BTU DOE and CEER 14.2, but a larger cabinet and required heat-mode drain. If heating is unnecessary, MAP14S1TBL-A is a separate cooling-only Duo. Neither changes the gray model's unknown efficiency; MAP10HS1XWGR-T is also a separate suffix.
What this assessment does not establish
This documentation-based assessment uses Midea's exact U.S. product page, the manual whose cover names MAP10HS1XWGR and the exact-page-linked manufacturer image. The product photo is a dark-gray catalog cutout, not an in-room photograph; it cannot establish dimensions beyond the written specification or prove performance. CEER remains unknown, recall status has not been checked, and no cooling, heating, noise or energy test is claimed. Verify the suffix, included window and drain parts, operating condition and original warranty paperwork before paying for an earlier unit.
