Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does it meet the cooling threshold?
9,850 BTU/h SACC clears an 8,000-SACC need but not 10,000 SACC. Do not use the 14,000 ASHRAE number as a substitute.
Explore this need in the finder →Is heat essential?
Exact-suffix heat is unknown; the shared manual says “on some models.” It cannot satisfy essential heating without exact confirmation.
Explore this need in the finder →Does your window fall within the kit range?
The listed panel spans 20–46 in with a 4.8 in minimum opening height. Measure and verify the earlier offer has the kit.
Explore this need in the finder →Must connected control work?
The exact model is listed Smart/Wi-Fi, but demonstrate pairing to SmartHQ on the unit you would buy.
Explore this need in the finder →Can you route a gravity drain for extended Dry use?
GE lists continuous drainage; the manual uses a 1/2 in OD flexible hose to a floor drain in extended Dry mode. Hose inclusion is unknown; a lift pump is not established.
Explore this need in the finder →The GE APWA14YBMW is an earlier connected portable air conditioner, not a current appliance to buy on the strength of a specification card alone. GE lists 9,850 BTU/h SACC, 14,000 BTU/h ASHRAE and an estimate for rooms up to 550 square feet; the Owner Center dates manufacture from March 2022 through May 2025, and GE now says the model is no longer manufactured. Treat any offer as a specific used or remaining-stock unit: exact condition, included parts, app pairing and remaining warranty must be checked.
Use SACC for room and capacity comparisons
Do not let the larger ASHRAE number decide a SACC-based question. At 9,850 BTU/h SACC, this model clears an 8,000-SACC floor but misses a strict 10,000-SACC minimum by 150 BTU/h. A 14,000-BTU/h ASHRAE figure is not interchangeable with SACC. GE’s 550-square-foot estimate is useful context, not a guarantee: sunlight, ceiling height, air leakage, room connections and local heat load can change the practical fit. If a recommendation asks for a minimum capacity, use the exact SACC number, not a rounded category label.
The older APWA14YZMW is a related but separate suffix, listed at 9,700 SACC and 13,500 ASHRAE. Those modest rating differences do not prove a meaningful real-room performance jump or identical internal design. Match the model label to the exact specification before comparing. This is also a single-hose machine: the exhaust hose sends indoor air outdoors, so it does not offer the paired exhaust/intake arrangement some shoppers may want for pressure balance.
Connected control is useful only if it still works
GE calls APWA14YBMW a Smart portable AC and identifies built-in connected control. That can help someone who values remote scheduling or app control, but a legacy feature list is not proof that a particular earlier unit still pairs with the currently supported SmartHQ service. Ask the seller to demonstrate the exact suffix on the cabinet and a successful connection using the application you expect to use. Without that proof, treat Wi-Fi as a possible benefit rather than a guaranteed reason to pay more.
Heating needs more caution. The GE manual linked by the exact model support page covers a family of room ACs and says heat appears only “on some models.” I did not find an exact-suffix statement that establishes APWA14YBMW heating. It therefore cannot be recommended when same-unit heat is essential, even if a family manual includes heating instructions. A confirmed heat/cool model is the safer alternative for that questionnaire choice.
Measure the window and clear the cabinet
GE lists a single five-foot exhaust hose and a window kit for 20–46-inch openings with a 4.8-inch minimum height. The manual says the appliance must vent outdoors and warns not to lengthen the included hose; a longer or extended duct can reduce cooling and overheat the unit. Measure the actual clear opening, check the panel range, and confirm that the older offer includes adapters and seals. Do not assume a missing part will be simple to replace.
The cabinet is 32 inches high, 18.5 inches wide and 15.5 inches deep, with a listed net weight of 70.5 pounds. Casters are helpful on a level floor but do not make stairs or solo installation easy; the manual recommends two people. Clearance text is not perfectly uniform: the location guidance specifies 20 inches at the exterior wall and 30 inches on other sides, while the hose-connection section repeats 20 inches from the wall and obstructions. Preserve generous side clearance and follow the model’s installation guide rather than squeezing it into a tight alcove. GE lists 115 V, 12 cooling amps and 1,350 W; the exact page also gives 120 V/15 A plug capacity. Use the required grounded three-prong outlet and no extension cord or adapter.
Drainage and routine care
GE lists self-evaporative condensate, 100 pints per day and continuous drainage. For extended Dry-mode use, the linked manual directs the owner to attach a 1/2-inch outside-diameter flexible hose to the drain port and route it to a floor drain. It does not establish that the hose is included with a used offer or that the appliance has a built-in lift pump. The manual also documents a full-water indication and lower manual drain, so automatic evaporation should not be read as “no water management ever.” A permanent gravity route is practical only if your floor drain is reachable at the unit’s low port; do not plan on lifting water uphill.
The permanent-mesh filter is accessible; GE’s manual recommends cleaning filters at least every two weeks. GE lists 7.9 EER and 50/52 dBA low/high noise, but those are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. An exact CEER and annual energy-use value were not found, so this model cannot clear a questionnaire that requires a documented minimum CEER.
Who should consider APWA14YBMW?
Consider it if you are evaluating a specific earlier unit, need roughly the documented 9,850-SACC tier, have a compatible window and can verify the Smart feature and included installation parts. Reject or leave it unmatched when a 10,000-SACC minimum, confirmed same-unit heating, a dual-hose layout, a specific CEER threshold or a built-in pump is essential. If your priority is simpler current support rather than an older connected product, compare current portable models with documented rating labels and accessible service. If the capacity band fits but app control does not matter, the related APWA14YZMW is a separate earlier GE option with its own lower 9,700-SACC rating; do not mix their labels or parts.
